Canada’s Family Class immigration category allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parent(s) or grandparent(s) to live permanently in Canada through the Parent and Grandparent Program.

The Government of Canada introduced a new application intake process for the parents and grandparents program (PGP) in 2017. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) randomly selects 10,000 applications of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents to Canada when they open this application portal once every year.

You need an invitation from IRCC before you can apply to sponsor your parents under this category. To get an invitation to apply, you must meet the following conditions:

1. Make sure you are eligible to sponsor.
2. Submit your interest to the sponsor form.
3. Wait to be invited. IRCC will invite you to submit a complete application in the same order interest to sponsor forms are received online.

 

To be eligible to sponsor:

• You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
• You must be 18 years of age or older.
• Your household income must meet the Minimum necessary income requirement for Family Sponsorship.
• You must sign an undertaking agreement that commits you to provide financial support for your sponsored parents or grandparents and repay any provincial social assistance benefits paid to the sponsored family members for 20 years.
• If the sponsor lives in Quebec, an additional undertaking agreement must be signed.

Sponsors must provide Notices of Assessment (NOA)  for the past 3 consecutive years from the CRA to IRCC to prove that they meet the income requirement.

Please note that if you do not qualify for Parents and Grandparents sponsorship because you do not meet the MNI for the 3 year period, you can apply for the super visa as the income required for this program is only for 1 year and it is about 30% lower than the PGP.
