This category is for investors and business immigrants and they do not need to apply under the express entry system. They are selected primarily based on their ability to create jobs for themselves and other Canadians. There are 2 broad categories under this Program. The Self Employed Persons Class and Start-Up Visa Program.

Self Employed Persons Class

This category is for individuals or a group of individuals who may become permanent residents of Canada based on their ability to become economically established in Canada as self-employed persons.

Candidates for the Self-Employed Persons Program must have the experience, intention, and ability to make a “significant contribution” to Canada’s cultural life, athletics, or purchase and management of a farm in Canada.

Basic Requirements

• Relevant Experience: Applicants must demonstrate that they have at least two years of relevant experience during the period beginning five years before the date of the permanent resident application and ending on the day a determination is made on the application.
• Self-employed experience in cultural activities or athletics will capture those traditionally applying in this category, for example, music teachers, painters, illustrators, filmmakers, freelance journalists. Beyond that, the category is intended to capture those people who work behind the scenes as a self-employed person, for example, choreographers, set designers, coaches, and trainers. If you want to apply under the self-employed program, check if your occupation can be considered self-employment. This is not a definitive or exhaustive list.
• Participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics intends to capture performers. This describes those who perform in the arts, and in the world of sport. “World-class” identifies persons who are known internationally. It also identifies persons who may not be known internationally but performs at the highest levels in their discipline.

A member of the Self-Employed Persons Class requires at least 35 points out of a possible total of 100 points attached to experience, age, education, official language proficiency and adaptability.
